Thirsty Rough: background and attribution

Thirsty Rough is Ryan Martinson’s weathered companion to Thirsty Script, published by Yellow Design Studio. The source relates its texture to letterpress printing and provides multiple distress treatments at each weight. Keep this rough edition distinct from the cleaner Thirsty Script family.

Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.

02

Forms, styles and what to inspect

Compare texture strength separately from stroke weight. The original family includes shadow options and texture resources as well as letter styles. A specimen with a deliberately uneven surface is not a damaged font; evaluate whether that detail helps the chosen output.

Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.

03

Try it in a real layout

Try a cafe label or short poster heading on a plain background. Start with lighter distress, then compare a stronger texture at the final size. Keep small ingredients, prices or dates in a cleaner face, and allow the script enough vertical room before adding a shadow.

For independent comparisons, try Lobster and Yellowtail. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
