Theano Didot: background and attribution

Alexey Kryukov designed Theano Didot as part of the Theano Classical Fonts project. In his repository account, he explains that the collection grew from historical specimens, initially concentrating on Greek before adding compatible Latin letters. The goal was to recover the atmosphere of older classical text editions, rather than build an all-purpose modern superfamily.

Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.

02

Forms, styles and what to inspect

The project documents Latin and Greek, including polytonic Greek, but does not claim comprehensive Unicode support. The CTAN adaptation provides TrueType and Type 1 resources for traditional and modern LaTeX workflows. Its bold is artificially emboldened, and the package explicitly lacks an italic variant; those details matter when building an emphasis hierarchy.

Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.

03

Try it in a real layout

Typeset a small passage containing the exact Greek accents and Latin punctuation needed for the publication. Inspect diacritics, line spacing and the appearance of emphasis. Decide how to handle italic text before committing an entire document, rather than discovering missing styles after the layout is complete.

For independent comparisons, try Prata and Cormorant Garamond. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.

GOOD QUESTIONS

Your questions, answered.

Does Theano Didot include a designed italic?

The linked CTAN package explicitly states that it has no italic variants. It also identifies its supplied bold as artificially emboldened.

Is Theano Didot limited to Latin letters?

The project documents Latin and Greek, including polytonic Greek. It does not claim exhaustive Unicode coverage, so inspect the characters needed by your text.

Are the font and LaTeX support files under the same license?

CTAN lists the SIL Open Font License for the font and the LaTeX Project Public License for the support material. Read the notices accompanying the particular resources you use.
