Terminus: background and attribution

The Terminus project presents a fixed-width bitmap font designed for extended computer work. Its release history documents incremental character additions, rendering adjustments and format support rather than a single unchanging file. The project moved its font license to SIL Open Font License 1.1 in the documented 4.32 release.

Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.

02

Forms, styles and what to inspect

Terminus supplies specific pixel matrices, including 6×12 and several larger sizes. Normal and bold are not available uniformly: the project explicitly says there is no bold 6×12 or designed italic. Its pseudographic characters support terminal-style frames, while character coverage and variants need assessment in the actual selected resource.

Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.

03

Try it in a real layout

Compare a terminal screen containing code, punctuation and box-drawing characters at a supported pixel size. Avoid judging a bitmap font from a freely scaled image alone: the intended matrix affects its appearance. Check your terminal's format support and use the project's documentation for the applicable installation path.

For independent comparisons, try Source Code Pro and Roboto Mono. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.

GOOD QUESTIONS

Your questions, answered.

Is Terminus a scalable outline font?

The original project describes a bitmap font supplied at defined pixel matrices. Other conversions should be assessed from their own sources rather than assumed identical.

Does Terminus include bold at every size?

No. The project explicitly states that its 6×12 resource has no separate bold. It also does not supply a designed italic.

Does its Braille-looking character range provide Braille support?

The project explicitly says the included variants of U+2800–U+28FF do not provide Braille support. Do not infer accessibility functionality from the presence of visually similar symbols.
