Tempo: background and attribution

R. Hunter Middleton designed Tempo for Ludlow, with releases in 1930–1931. Linotype places it among the geometric sans-serif designs that followed Futura’s success, while noting its humanist influence. The family’s association with headline and commercial-printing work helps explain why condensed display resources are part of its history.

Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.

02

Forms, styles and what to inspect

Compare the geometric construction alongside the softer, humanist decisions described by the publisher. The current digital catalog and historical family can contain different resources, so identify the selected edition and weight. A similar period or broad classification does not make Tempo and Futura metrically interchangeable.

Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.

03

Try it in a real layout

Try a short news-style heading and a supporting line at a fixed size. Compare a condensed treatment where space is limited, inspecting counters and punctuation rather than judging only the total line length. Keep a plain reading face for longer copy and inspect the final hierarchy at the actual output size.

For independent comparisons, try Josefin Sans and Roboto Condensed. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
