Tekton: background and attribution
David Siegel designed Tekton for Adobe, which originally released the family in 1989. Its source was the hand lettering of Seattle architect and author Francis D. K. Ching. Siegel had worked as a draftsman, and architects were the initial audience. Adobe explains that the name comes from the Greek word for builder. The family subsequently found uses beyond drawings, including invitations, correspondence and signs.

Forms, styles and what to inspect
Adobe describes Tekton as a combination of simple, clean letterforms and a personal, informal character. That balance connects its architectural origins with everyday communication. Tekton Pro expands the original design for OpenType with more weights and widths, a larger character set and more extensive kerning. Those additions give designers a broader range of typographic settings while retaining the family’s connection to lettering rather than a conventional mechanical drafting alphabet.
Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.
Try it in a real layout
On a planning board, use Tekton for short explanations attached to drawings and keep each note close to the feature it describes. Establish one size for labels and another for longer annotations so the page remains easy to scan. Set technical measurements in a consistent companion face if that improves alignment. For an invitation, try a brief Tekton heading above a quieter text block, leaving sufficient space around the handwritten character.
For independent comparisons, try Architects Daughter and Patrick Hand. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
