TED Talk Font: Inter Guidance and the Helvetica Design History

Find TEDx’s current Inter guidance, understand the older Helvetica connection, and distinguish event logos, website text and presentation typography.

Separate TED’s wordmark history, current TEDx event guidance and an individual speaker’s slide typography before naming a TED talk font. A typeface documented in an older website redesign is useful history, but is not automatically the current instruction for a new event logo.

01

Read the current TEDx font instruction in its event context

The TEDx Organizer Guide specifies Inter for event-logo typography and says teams previously using Helvetica may retain it or update to Inter. It distinguishes a TEDx event identity from the TED logo and provides its own logo generator and final-production templates. The page associates its guideline changes with 2023, with optional adoption for organizers licensed earlier.

For an authorized event, begin with that guide and the actual licensed event name. A separately typed word is not the same resource as the supplied logo artwork. The Inter specimen here shows the named family independently; it is not an official event-logo generator.

02

Keep the Helvetica account attached to its historical redesign

Monotype’s case study, first published in September 2015, documents Neue Helvetica in a TED.com redesign and describes the original TED logo as based on that design. The project discusses choosing weights and line spacing for different kinds of content, including long names and headlines.

Read this as a historical website and branding account. It does not establish that every current TED interface or every speaker’s slide uses the same font. The Neue Helvetica family guide covers the resource separately. Keep the source date and application beside a reference so an archived design is not silently presented as a new event specification.

03

Build a presentation hierarchy before styling every slide

For an independent talk, prepare a title, one explanatory sentence and a source credit. Compare the longest speaker name or heading as well as a short specimen phrase. Keep the slide’s main message distinct from the brand asset: enlarging a logo or imitating its lettering does not decide how an audience will read a paragraph.

Compare a title-only slide and a slide with realistic supporting text at the intended display scale. Revise unnecessary wording before forcing a long title into a narrow box. Keep source credits readable and consistently positioned rather than treating them as leftover space. The homepage’s copyable text styles offer Unicode caption treatments; they do not install a presentation font, apply a complete slide theme or reproduce a supplied TED or TEDx identity.

GOOD QUESTIONS

Your questions, answered.

Should a new TEDx event use Helvetica or Inter?

The current organizer guidance specifies Inter and separately permits teams that previously used Helvetica to retain it or switch. Follow the event’s applicable official templates and instructions.

Does one TED talk font explain all slides and website text?

No. Logo artwork, event identity, historical website typography and an individual slide deck are different references. Identify the exact application before assigning a family.
