Syntax: background and attribution
Hans Eduard Meier developed Syntax, which the Linotype account dates to 1968 and associates with D. Stempel AG. Its construction draws on Old Face letterforms while translating that foundation into a modern sans serif. This relationship to older reading types helps explain its humanist character rather than suggesting a purely geometric origin.

Forms, styles and what to inspect
The publisher highlights a subtle inclination to the right that contributes movement to the design. Compare that underlying direction with the separately drawn italic rather than treating the two as equivalent. Digital editions can offer different selections of weights and styles, so identify the actual package when matching existing documents.
Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. Independent alternatives have different shapes, metrics and coverage.
Try it in a real layout
Compare a paragraph and a short heading at their intended sizes. Inspect the rhythm of the lowercase, punctuation and emphasized words. Keep the selected edition consistent when matching older documents so substitutions do not silently change line breaks.
For independent comparisons, try Alegreya Sans and Source Sans 3. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
Official preview and font resources
Use Linotype to try the original and investigate the files, styles and terms for your intended workflow. This site does not distribute or serve Syntax font software.
The editable alternatives here have their own source profiles and included licenses. For the difference between a font file and copied characters, read Unicode text versus fonts.
