Steelfish: background and attribution
Raymond Larabie released Steelfish in March 2001 with loose inspiration from early twentieth-century newspaper headlines. His account describes a substantial rebuild in the 2010s that redrew most details while retaining basic proportions. The present family should therefore not be treated as unchanged software from 2001.
Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.
Forms, styles and what to inspect
A November 2024 update reorganized weight names and corrected overlapping Vietnamese accents. For example, the previous Book became Light. Older artwork and current files can consequently use different labels, so record the release as well as the selected name when reproducing a design.
Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.
Try it in a real layout
Compare a narrow headline and a numeric subheading at fixed width. Inspect the punctuation and accented text before exporting. If matching an older project, use the documented weight-name changes rather than choosing solely by the old menu label.
For independent comparisons, try Bebas Neue and Roboto Condensed. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
