Use the publisher identity to resolve the word Standard
CastleType’s Standard CT account documents a 1991 San Francisco Focus magazine commission to digitize three members of Standard. Jason Castle is credited with the expanded digital family. That is a named design, not a universal standard font installed on every computer. For an editorial project, record Standard CT and CastleType rather than leaving the specification as standard font, which a collaborator could reasonably interpret as the application default.
Choose a width before changing the headline’s weight
The publisher describes four width branches—normal, Condensed, Semi-Extended and Extended—with nine weights each, plus Extra Condensed Medium and Stencil Bold. Build a heading comparison in equal-width frames: first hold weight and point size steady while comparing widths, then choose a lighter or darker weight inside the selected branch. Do not assume the two additional resources have the same complete weight range. Save the full style name in the heading style so a future revision changes weight deliberately rather than accidentally switching the proportions.
Keep historical catalog naming separate from the actual files
Linotype’s Basic Commercial account also records Standard as a historical US distribution name. That relationship does not establish that two publishers’ current digital files have identical spacing, feature coverage or line breaks. If replacing a font in an existing publication, compare a caption, a paragraph and a number-heavy table before accepting the substitution. The homepage Unicode text experiments work by replacing characters; they do not install Standard CT or preserve the metrics of either publisher’s font. Keep the source edition documented alongside the comparison.
Your questions, answered.
Does standard font mean one universal system font?
No. It can be an informal request for a default, while Standard CT is a specific CastleType product. Confirm which meaning the project requires.
Do Extra Condensed and Stencil automatically have nine weights each?
Do not infer that from the main width system. CastleType’s account separately identifies Extra Condensed Medium and Stencil Bold.
