Seriously Nostalgic Serif: background and attribution

Seriously Nostalgic Serif is Nicky Laatz’s family inspired by 1980s magazine typography. The creator distinguishes standard and finer-contrast resources, upright and italic forms, and several degrees of condensation. The project’s 2022 updates added styles and separate Photoshop actions; those actions are not themselves font files.

Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.

02

Forms, styles and what to inspect

Compare contrast treatment separately from width. A Fine Ultra Condensed Italic combines several choices, so first choose a width and then compare the finer details. Read the exact style name rather than assuming that every retro-looking sample uses the same resource.

Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.

03

Try it in a real layout

Try an editorial title, a short pull quote and a caption. Compare a plain background before adding photography or a retro image effect. Adjust the space around the title at its final size, while keeping small practical information clear in a restrained companion.

For independent comparisons, try Playfair Display and Prata. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
