Self Modern Font

Lucas Le Bihan’s Self Modern began with Japanese Mincho specimens collected from books and magazines brought back from Japan in 2015. The creator combined those references with research into automatic composition and self-spacing types. Book, Semi Bold and Bold resources were later added with Roxane Gataud in 2021.

Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.

Bretagne describes Self Modern as designed to sit beside Japanese characters at a corresponding size and weight. That aim does not mean every Latin font file supplies Japanese glyphs. Compare the selected resources together, including punctuation and line rhythm, rather than assuming equal numeric sizes guarantee a balanced mixed-script setting.

Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.

Set a short bilingual heading and a few supporting lines using the actual languages required. Compare the visual size, baseline relationships and density of the two scripts. Keep the text wording fixed while adjusting the hierarchy, and document the companion Japanese typeface separately from the Self Modern resource.
