01

A designer’s name is not one alphabet

A Saul Bass-inspired request can mean an irregular headline, a cut-paper silhouette or a dramatic use of empty space. Identify the actual poster or film-title project before naming its lettering. Different works have different construction and collaborators. A font marketed with a familiar designer’s name does not establish that the designer created it or used it on a historical poster.

02

What the Archive’s original posters show

Letterform Archive describes original prints including The Man with the Golden Arm, Vertigo and Anatomy of a Murder. Its collection account highlights jagged lettering, bold color and generous negative space. It also notes that the lettering process is incompletely documented and that craftspeople in Bass’s studio contributed to execution. This institutional evidence supports careful attribution rather than assigning every letter to one person or font.

03

Use lettering as part of a single visual idea

For an independent film poster, choose one central image and a short title. Decide which part carries the tension: the silhouette, an interrupted shape or the relationship between text and empty space. Let the lettering reinforce that idea instead of adding unrelated roughness. Keep the release information and credit line quieter so the main concept can be understood before the details are read.

04

Compare independent display starting points

Try Permanent Marker, Anton and Limelight as different starting points for your own title. They are independent fonts, not historical Bass alphabets or exact poster replicas. Compare the whole composition before changing individual letters. If custom drawing becomes necessary, retain a clear reading path and record the original source that informed the design rather than implying an undocumented attribution.

GOOD QUESTIONS

Your questions, answered.

Is there one official font behind all Saul Bass posters?

The Archive describes varied lettering and an incompletely documented studio process, not one universal font resource.

Did Bass personally draw every letter on every project?

Letterform Archive notes contributions from other craftspeople and warns that execution details are not always fully documented.
