Russell Square: background and attribution

John Russell designed Russell Square for Visual Graphics Corporation in 1973, as documented in the Klingspor Museum’s designer record. Linotype’s digital catalog retains the family and credits Russell. The historical record includes more named treatments than the current two-style catalog package, so distinguish the original collection from the edition being obtained today.

Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.

02

Forms, styles and what to inspect

The current catalog lists a two-style family, while the museum record includes regular, oblique and lighter historical treatments. Compare the exact digital resources offered rather than assuming every historically listed style is included. Inspect the shape and spacing of actual words in the original specimen before substituting a similarly named square sans-serif.

Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.

03

Try it in a real layout

Try a short technology-exhibition heading with a smaller location line. Compare upright and oblique treatments at the same size, inspecting punctuation and numerals as well as the capitals. Keep supporting prose in a clear reading face and record the exact style name for future editing.

For independent comparisons, try Michroma and Russo One. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
