01

Identify the magazine rather than the band

The singular magazine title and the plural band name can lead to different references. This guide concerns the magazine’s cover wordmark. Save the issue date when identifying it: outlines, shading and letter details have changed. An article headline inside the magazine is another typographic role, so its font should not be inferred solely from the nameplate above it.

02

The designer’s account of the 2022 update

XYZ Type documents Jesse Ragan’s work on the magazine’s 2022 logo, following a commission initiated through Roger Black. Its history describes earlier lettering associated with Rick Griffin, John Pistilli and Jim Parkinson. The new project balanced those precedents with the need to function on digital platforms. This is a sequence of custom lettering decisions, not evidence of one unchanged stock font.

03

Different sizes required different assets

XYZ Type describes creating a suite that included shaded, flat, simplified small-size and monogram forms. That explains why reducing a detailed cover logo is not always enough for a tiny icon. For an original publication, begin with a full-width heading, then consider which details survive a compact crop. If an ornamental line disappears, simplify the small version instead of making all uses equally elaborate.

04

Compare independent editorial display faces

Try Abril Fatface, DM Serif Display and Rye on an original magazine name. These are separate typefaces, not Rolling Stone’s custom alphabet. Place the name over both a quiet background and a busy photograph, then compare how much contrast and space it needs. Keep issue numbers and cover lines in a restrained supporting system rather than repeating every decorative effect.

GOOD QUESTIONS

Your questions, answered.

Is Rolling Stone’s magazine logo simply a downloadable font?

XYZ Type documents custom lettering and multiple logo assets. Naming a similar font does not reproduce that complete system.

Does this guide identify the Rolling Stones band’s lettering?

No. The band and the magazine are different references; this guide concerns the magazine wordmark.
