Rigid Square: background and attribution

Ryoichi Tsunekawa designed Rigid Square for Dharma Type around octagonal construction and cuts at 45 degrees. The creator account specifically includes longer text, such as mechanical instructions, within its intended role. This distinguishes its practical aim from a purely decorative alphabet that only suggests machinery.

Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.

02

Forms, styles and what to inspect

Compare the repeated angular construction across lowercase letters, capitals, figures and punctuation. The geometric rule is a design feature, but practical reading still depends on the chosen size, spacing and surrounding layout. Inspect the original specimen with real sentences rather than relying only on a large alphabet display.

Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.

03

Try it in a real layout

Try a small instruction panel containing a title, two sentences and a numbered step. Compare its appearance at the final printed or screen size. Keep the hierarchy clear and inspect potentially confusing letter-and-number combinations, especially where a reader needs to identify a code accurately.

For independent comparisons, try Russo One and Roboto. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
