Requiem: background and attribution
Jonathan Hoefler began Requiem in 1991 for Travel & Leisure; the publisher records its appearance there in 1993. Its capitals draw on Ludovico Vicentino degli Arrighi’s 1523 writing manual. The modern lowercase and italic extend beyond that source rather than being complete alphabets copied from the manual.
Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.
Forms, styles and what to inspect
The family distinguishes masters for different size ranges, including text and display roles. A lettering source and a contemporary optical-size system solve different problems. Compare the selected master at the size where the design will actually be used.
Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.
Try it in a real layout
Prepare a book title, an italic quotation and a short reading paragraph. Inspect the finer forms on the real background and leave enough room around decorative letters. Keep the exact optical choice recorded so another editor can reproduce the intended texture.
For independent comparisons, try Cormorant Garamond and Cinzel. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
