01

Redaction: background and attribution

Jeremy Mickel designed Redaction with creative direction by Forest Young for Titus Kaphar and Reginald Dwayne Betts’ exhibition project at MoMA PS1. Its bitmap degradation refers to the reproduction of legal documents and the exhibition’s social context. The effect has a conceptual role beyond generic pixel styling.

Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.

02

Forms, styles and what to inspect

The project documents Regular, Italic and Bold across seven degradation grades, making 21 resources. The project page distributes the fonts under the Open Font License. Grades change the degradation treatment and should not be confused with a normal light-to-bold progression.

Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.

03

Try it in a real layout

Compare a short statement at a clear grade and a more degraded grade. Keep the full readable statement available where the extreme treatment obscures it. This typography is a visual design project and does not securely redact confidential text.

For independent comparisons, try Source Serif 4 and Special Elite. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
