Railroad Gothic: background and attribution
Linotype’s account traces Railroad Gothic to a 1906 American Type Founders design intended for railway signage. Its compressed, heavy display character also recalls nineteenth-century American wood type. Later headline uses reflect that assertive shape, rather than making the family a general font for continuous text.
Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.
Forms, styles and what to inspect
Railroad Gothic uses capitals with very narrow proportions and substantial weight. Compare the actual glyph sheet for figures and punctuation, especially where a title includes dates or abbreviations. Its condensed construction is part of the drawing and should not be imitated by squeezing an unrelated font horizontally.
Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.
Try it in a real layout
Try a short exhibition headline in one line and then in two stacked lines. Keep the letters large enough that their inner spaces remain distinct. Pair the heading with a quieter reading face for details, and inspect the whole composition from the distance at which the poster will be read.
For independent comparisons, try Anton and Bebas Neue. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
