Pragmatica: background and attribution

ParaType traces Pragmatica to Polygraphmash’s Encyclopedia-4 work in 1987 and Vladimir Yefimov’s initial 1989 release. Later contributors expanded its styles and widths. Its Helvetica-related reference belongs within a wider grotesque tradition rather than making it an identical copy of another family.

Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.

02

Forms, styles and what to inspect

The current catalog describes normal, condensed and extended widths with oblique resources. Extended Latin and Cyrillic coverage, small capitals and other OpenType features support varied layouts. Check the selected package because the family developed through multiple additions.

Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.

03

Try it in a real layout

Compare a paragraph, a short heading and a narrow column label. Choose the width for the available space before changing tracking. Inspect the actual language and number styles when building a document with several scripts or data tables.

For independent comparisons, try Roboto and Inter. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
