Plaza: background and attribution

British designer Alan Meeks created Plaza, an Art Deco-influenced sans-serif design. ITC’s family account connects its character with the visual mood of the 1920s and 1930s. Those period references describe the design’s inspiration, rather than proving a release during either decade.

Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.

02

Forms, styles and what to inspect

The publisher highlights alternative characters as a central part of the family’s flexibility. Inspect the original specimen to see which alternatives fit a particular word. A decorative alternate should be compared in context, since changing one capital can alter the balance of an entire short heading.

Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.

03

Try it in a real layout

Try a short theatre-program title and a smaller venue line. Start with the default letters, then compare selected alternates while keeping size and spacing stable. Give the headline enough surrounding space and use a quieter supporting face for dates, seating details and longer descriptions.

For independent comparisons, try Josefin Sans and Poiret One. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
