Pistilli Roman: background and attribution
The Walker Art Center’s 2007 account identifies Herb Lubalin and John Pistilli as collaborators on Pistilli Roman. It discusses the historical phototype design and variations in fine-stroke thickness. That dated account predates ClaudeP’s later digital distribution and should not be read as a current claim that no digital files exist.
Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.
Forms, styles and what to inspect
The historical lettering and a later digital interpretation require separate attribution. ClaudeP’s credited listing supplies a single OpenType resource, with a 2011 listing and 2013 update. Its availability does not by itself establish authorization by the historical designers or an identical set of styles.
Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.
Try it in a real layout
Compare a short high-contrast title at its final size and inspect the fine strokes on the intended background. Check which digital interpretation a project actually uses before matching older artwork. Keep longer supporting text in a calmer reading face.
For independent comparisons, try Prata and Playfair Display. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
