Piepie: background and attribution
Ryoichi Tsunekawa designed Piepie for Dharma Type as an especially heavy display face for titles and short captions. The creator’s description emphasizes the relationship between its large lowercase body and very short ascenders and descenders. Its role is a concentrated visual statement rather than a neutral paragraph voice.
Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.
Forms, styles and what to inspect
Piepie combines substantial weight with sharp details and a large x-height. Compare counters and punctuation at the actual output size: a heavy design can look very different as a large headline and a small thumbnail. Short ascenders and descenders describe proportions, not a rule that line spacing can always be reduced without consequence.
Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.
Try it in a real layout
Try a brief poster title and a compact promotional heading. Keep the wording short and inspect spaces between tightly packed shapes. Use a lighter, simpler companion face for the supporting paragraph, and compare the title on both a large canvas and a small final export.
For independent comparisons, try Fredoka and Chewy. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
