Perfectly Nineties: background and attribution

Jen Wagner created Perfectly Nineties in response to the return of tightly spaced serif styles associated with the 1980s and 1990s. The expanded family builds on an earlier regular-and-italic release. The creator’s family page identifies the expansion as 16 fonts despite the older wording retained in its URL.

Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.

02

Forms, styles and what to inspect

Eight weights from Thin to Black have italic companions. The family’s tight texture needs deliberate spacing decisions at different sizes. Perfectly Nineties Handwritten is a separately identified companion and should not be confused with the serif family’s italic styles.

Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.

03

Try it in a real layout

Compare a nostalgic magazine-style title with a short paragraph. Adjust tracking for each size and inspect pairs containing broad capitals. Keep the paragraph’s line length stable while judging whether the tight texture remains comfortable.

For independent comparisons, try Lora and DM Serif Display. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
