Peignot: background and attribution

A. M. Cassandre designed Peignot in the 1930s, as described in Monotype’s preserved FontShop account. Its unusual lowercase treatment mixes forms associated with uppercase and lowercase, making it different from merely applying a small-cap command.

Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.

02

Forms, styles and what to inspect

The linked Monotype edition lists Light, Demi and Bold resources. Compare the actual mixed-case alphabet and stroke contrast in the original specimen. A general Art Deco label does not establish identical letterforms in another family.

Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.

03

Try it in a real layout

Try an advertisement heading and a short mixed-case phrase. Poiret One and Josefin Sans offer independent geometric display comparisons. Inspect readability in the actual words before choosing an unconventional lowercase treatment.

For independent comparisons, try Poiret One and Josefin Sans. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
