Ortica: background and attribution
Ben Bovani designed Ortica, released by Collletttivo on 13 February 2019 and updated as version 2.000 in March 2023. The foundry describes a calligraphic serif with contrasting but related personalities. Its account links the angular construction to Czech designer Vojtech Preissig and Preissig Antiqua. The official family page identifies an SIL Open Font License release, giving readers a creator-controlled starting point for the actual font and its terms rather than an anonymous download mirror.
Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.
Forms, styles and what to inspect
The current presentation divides Ortica into Linear and Angular branches, with Linear Light, Regular and Bold alongside Angular Bold. The angular drawing is built from straight segments, while the smoother construction retains sharp, pointed serifs. Collletttivo explains that large sizes reveal the construction most clearly, although the family also supports smaller settings. The page demonstrates Latin character coverage, accents, numerals and other symbols; compare the specific branch rather than assuming that every weight has the same angular treatment.
Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.
Try it in a real layout
Make a botanical booklet cover with a plant name, a small subtitle and a short introductory paragraph. Compare the angular bold title with a linear title using the same wording and width. Let the construction provide the main visual interest before adding illustrations. In a second proof, reduce the whole cover to its final size and inspect the pointed details, line breaks and spacing around punctuation so the smallest elements remain useful rather than merely decorative.
For independent comparisons, try Cormorant Garamond and Source Serif 4. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
