New Kansas: background and attribution

Miles Newlyn’s New Kansas reinterprets Oswald Cooper’s Cooper Black for a broader contemporary family. The foundry describes a system extending the original warm, rounded character into ordinary and more expressive branches. Its historical reference is an influence rather than a claim that these are unchanged Cooper files.

Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.

02

Forms, styles and what to inspect

Roman, Italic, Swash and ExtraSwash provide different levels of movement and decoration. The current collection lists eight Roman weights and separate italic branches. Choose the branch before comparing totals or assuming every flourish is part of the ordinary Roman font.

Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.

03

Try it in a real layout

Try a warm packaging heading and a short italic accent. Compare plain and swash versions using the actual word, adding decoration gradually. Inspect the heavy rounded shapes at smaller sizes and keep dense supporting details independently spaced.

For independent comparisons, try Corben and DM Serif Display. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
