For a website symbol, identify the icon library first
If you need a search, menu or user symbol, start with the library already installed in the project. Font Awesome’s official instructions distinguish the icon’s name, style and family; changing a plain text font name is not the equivalent operation. The Font Awesome setup guide and Lucide font guide cover those actual resources. Keep the icon reference separate from the New Icon display family below. A word like new in a task request does not identify which icon package, version or integration the site uses.
Set Sail’s New Icon was designed to mix letter styles
In his original November 2024 update, Sam Parrett explains that New Icon launched in November 2022 as a digitally refined script and serif pairing. The initial idea allowed a script letter to sit within a serif word. The later update added serif lowercase and newly drawn italics in Regular and Condensed variants, expanding the package to five fonts. The original family resource is for letters, not a collection of interface pictograms. Confirm the exact package before installing it.
Mix a script letter deliberately, then test the whole word
For an original lettering study using this type of pairing, keep an unchanged serif word beside a version with one script character. Compare the neighboring spaces, baseline and space above or below the line. Try a second version with the script confined to a separate word; mixing within one word is an option rather than an obligation. DM Serif Display and Allura below are independent comparisons, not New Icon specimens or a guaranteed compatible pair. The copyable Unicode text generator creates substituted characters; it does not install New Icon or add a site’s icon library.
Your questions, answered.
Does Set Sail’s New Icon contain website navigation icons?
It is a script-and-serif lettering family. A website symbol belongs to an icon resource such as the library already used by the project.
What changed in the New Icon update?
Parrett documents serif lowercase and newly drawn italics for Regular and Condensed variants, producing a five-font package alongside the script.
