Nevis: background and attribution

Ed Merritt's Ten by Twenty project publishes Nevis within a catalog of typographic experiments. The creator describes starting the project in 2007 and distributing its fonts on a pay-what-you-feel-is-fair basis. That is the documented context for the font; the project's founding year should not be mistaken for a precisely documented Nevis release date.

Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.

02

Forms, styles and what to inspect

The official Nevis section lists one style and labels its specimen Regular, while the supplied keyword calls it Nevis Bold. Compare the actual resource rather than inferring separate Regular and Bold files from search wording. The source lists 126 glyphs, so check names, punctuation and accents rather than assuming broad script coverage.

Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.

03

Try it in a real layout

Try a short heading with uppercase, lowercase and numerals. Compare density at thumbnail size before using it in a small label. Keep the original distribution identified in shared files and select a different companion for roles requiring a larger language set or a coordinated italic.

For independent comparisons, try Montserrat and Manrope. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.

Official preview and font resources

Use Ten by Twenty to try the original and investigate the files, styles and terms for your intended workflow. This site does not distribute or serve Nevis font software.

The editable alternatives here have their own source profiles and included licenses. For the difference between a font file and copied characters, read Unicode text versus fonts.

GOOD QUESTIONS

Your questions, answered.

Where does Nevis come from?

It is published by Ed Merritt's Ten by Twenty project, whose official site provides the original specimen and download.

Does searching Nevis Bold establish a separate bold resource?

No. The current official section lists one style and labels its specimen Regular. Inspect the actual downloaded resource instead of inferring a full family from the query.

What terms does the creator give for the download?

Ten by Twenty states that its fonts use the SIL Open Font Licence for commercial and non-commercial projects. Use the original files and accompanying notices.
