Neutraface: background and attribution
Christian Schwartz designed Neutraface for House Industries in 2002, with art direction by Ken Barber and Andy Cruz. Richard Neutra’s architectural lettering supplied the starting point, but the surviving material required considerable interpretation. There was no lowercase reference to reproduce. Schwartz developed that part of the alphabet from scratch, consulting Futura, Nobel and Tempo while working toward a family that could extend beyond lettering on buildings.

Forms, styles and what to inspect
Neutraface separates display work from text settings. Its display range includes Thin, Light, Medium and Bold alongside Titling, Drafting and Numerals styles. The text family has Light, Book, Demi and Bold weights with italics and small capitals. Schwartz describes the italic as deliberately more individual than a sloped roman. The text fonts also provide several numeral treatments, fractions and italic small capitals for detailed typographic composition.
Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.
Try it in a real layout
For an architectural project page, set the project name in a display weight and reserve a text cut for the description. Keep dimensions, dates and room numbers in a consistent numeral style. Try a short uppercase heading beside a mixed-case alternative before choosing the final treatment. Pair the geometric title with generous margins and a restrained image grid; avoid making the smallest captions carry the same delicate weight as a large cover title.
For independent comparisons, try Josefin Sans and Montserrat. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
