What the project adds
The Nerd Fonts project combines programming typefaces with icons from several collections. It distributes ready-patched families and a patcher for other eligible fonts. The original font and the added icons remain separate parts of the resource’s identity.
A theme may request a symbol at a particular private-use code point. Selecting an ordinary font with similar letters does not ensure that symbol exists.
Choose the family and icon-width variant
The project documentation distinguishes monospaced, double-width and proportional icon variations. Those labels concern icon behavior and should not be reduced to a claim that every variant occupies identical terminal cells.
For a tabular terminal prompt, compare the exact variant recommended by your theme. Begin with one patched family rather than installing several nearly identical variants at once. Keep the downloaded resource’s name available when selecting it in the terminal preferences.
When icons show as squares or disturb alignment
First identify the font actually selected by the terminal or editor. Installation alone does not make every application use it. Then check whether your theme and font expect the same icon mapping and whether a fallback font is drawing the symbol.
Use a short sample containing a folder icon, a branch marker and plain text. If icons consume unexpected space, investigate the variant and terminal settings before compensating with arbitrary spaces in the prompt.
Original fonts and patched downloads
Hack and Source Code Pro show ordinary programming letterforms in our comparisons. These profiles are not downloads of their Nerd Fonts editions. Get a patched package from the original project and retain its accompanying license information.
Read the terminal font guide for the surrounding application workflow and Unicode text versus fonts for why a copied icon’s appearance depends on font support.
Your questions, answered.
Is Nerd Font one typeface?
No. Nerd Fonts patches multiple base font families with icon glyphs. Select the base family and intended icon-width variant.
Why does an icon appear as a box?
The active font may lack the requested glyph, or the application may be using another resource. Check the selected font, icon mapping and fallback behavior.
Are the previews here patched Nerd Fonts?
No. The linked Hack and Source Code Pro profiles describe their original families. Use the Nerd Fonts project for patched downloads.
