The university’s September 2023 font transition
In its September 25, 2023 announcement, UNL records the introduction of Work Sans, Source Serif 4 and Oswald, while retaining Liberator. The announcement says the previous Gotham, Mercury and Tungsten package was removed from university brand standards. It also documents an update to the department lockup system.
That dated transition explains why two genuine university publications may use different typefaces. It is evidence about institutional communications, not a blanket identification of athletics lettering. Consult the university typography guide for the resource linked by the announcement.
Audit an existing document before replacing type
List the document’s title, subheading, body text, captions and unit identifier. Record which fonts are actually assigned to those roles, including fonts hidden in paragraph styles. Keep a copy of the original layout so that a type change can be judged against its original line breaks and page count.
When updating official university work, obtain the current unit assets through the institution’s own resources. Retyping a department name with a similar-looking family is not the same as using the correct lockup. When studying an older publication, keep the publication date beside the font evidence rather than labeling every older choice a mistake.
Proof an event announcement in two reading roles
For an independent research-day announcement, give the event name a short prominent line and place its date, room and registration information together. Try Oswald for a narrow headline and Source Serif 4 for an explanatory paragraph. These local previews let you explore those separately distributed families; they are not an official university template.
Check the longest session name and the smallest room label before judging the overall style. If switching a family adds a line, revise the layout deliberately rather than reducing every text size to preserve the old page geometry.
For decorative wording in an accompanying post, explore the stylish text generator on the homepage. That tool produces Unicode text; it does not reproduce the named typeface, supply its files or carry its layout features.
Your questions, answered.
Does Nebraska font mean one Huskers jersey font?
No. This guide is scoped to the university communications transition. A jersey or athletics wordmark needs evidence for that particular asset and date.
Why might an older UNL document show different fonts?
Compare its date with the documented transition above. Historical identity evidence and the requirements for a new project are separate questions.
