Mr Eaves: background and attribution

Zuzana Licko developed Mr Eaves as a sans-serif companion to Mrs Eaves. Emigre’s design account explains that the project retained related proportions while making deliberate adjustments, rather than merely removing serifs. Its original Sans and Modern branches expand the choices within the larger Eaves project.

Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.

02

Forms, styles and what to inspect

The design reduces contrast and adjusts details such as f, j and t endings and the balance of lowercase c. Sans and Modern are distinct constructions, while XL resources belong to a separately identified expansion. Choose the exact branch before transferring character or size claims between them.

Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.

03

Try it in a real layout

Compare a heading with a Mrs Eaves paragraph, then inspect the lowercase rhythm in the chosen Mr Eaves branch. Use a fixed line width to compare wrapping. Record whether the document uses Sans, Modern or an XL resource when sharing files.

For independent comparisons, try DM Sans and Source Sans 3. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
