Mostra Nuova: background and attribution

Mostra Nuova is Mark Simonson’s expansion of Mostra, informed by Italian Art Deco advertising and poster lettering of the 1930s. The creator distinguishes the capitals-only Mostra released in 2001 from Mostra Nuova of 2009, which added lowercase, weights and broader language support.

Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.

02

Forms, styles and what to inspect

The geometric construction includes optical adjustments, and alternate characters allow both restrained and more stylized results. Compare the standard forms with a small number of alternates in your actual words. The creator documents stylistic sets rather than requiring every decorative choice to be assembled as separate artwork.

Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.

03

Try it in a real layout

Try a compact exhibition title and an editorial heading. Compare an all-capitals line with mixed case before choosing a treatment. Preserve clear supporting text for dates and locations, and avoid applying the most decorative form to every letter simply because it is available.

For independent comparisons, try Josefin Sans and Poiret One. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
