Keep the creator and project stage with the family name
AllCaps’ original Modern Gothic documentation credits Malte Bentzen, dates the first sketch to 2016 and the release to 2022. ECAL’s diploma-project account documents its American-gothic source direction and an earlier five-weight project. The current foundry lists six styles with italics and a variable resource. Keep those stages distinct when comparing an old specimen with an offered package. Separately, Pau Gomas Studio’s Modern Gothic is a high-contrast display design inspired by blackletter and sans-serif forms, with Light, Regular and Bold resources. This is another maker’s design, not a later weight of the AllCaps family.
Test AllCaps’ weight and width relationship instead of assuming fixed metrics
AllCaps describes a narrower text-oriented middle and wider Thin and Black extremes. Prepare a paragraph and a short headline using the same document width, then compare the intended text styles with an extreme display cut. Watch line endings and the total length of a repeated heading before deciding that changing weight is only a darkness adjustment. Keep a copy of the original composition so that reflow remains visible. Choose the text resource for its complete passage and the display resource for the actual title rather than forcing the same extreme weight into both roles.
Inspect letter and number features one change at a time
The AllCaps feature list includes a single-storey a, a double-storey g, tabular figures and several enclosed-number choices. Make a short proof containing those letters and a small numbered schedule. Apply one feature at a time, retaining a plain comparison beside it. Judge the actual number alignment before replacing ordinary list numbers with circles or squares; the decorative container may need different spacing from the surrounding words. Record the selected feature with the family and style instead of assuming that copying the text into another application carries the same glyph choices.
Proof the separate Pau Gomas design by contrast and role
For the Pau Gomas resource, compare a short exhibition title with a small caption using the original specimen. Inspect the thinnest strokes at the intended size and on the intended background; a strong large heading does not establish that the same composition will hold up when reduced. Keep detailed information in a quieter companion where necessary. Source Sans 3 and Pirata One are independent sans and expressive-display comparisons, not either Modern Gothic package. The homepage Unicode style choices substitute copyable characters rather than applying these families’ widths, contrast or OpenType features. For the broader construction comparison, see the sans-serif guide.
Your questions, answered.
Are the AllCaps and Pau Gomas Modern Gothic resources one family?
No. They have different creators and constructions. Keep the publisher, exact style and project documentation together when choosing files.
Does changing AllCaps’ weight necessarily preserve the same line length?
Do not assume it does. The maker explicitly describes width differences through the weight range; compare the actual text before finalizing a layout.
