Mexcellent: background and attribution
Ray Larabie released Mexcellent in 2000 as a homage to the three-line lettering associated with the 1968 Mexico City Olympics identity. His account names Lance Wyman and Eduardo Terrazas in that design background. Mexcellent is Larabie’s later interpretation, not the original Olympic alphabet or proof of an official connection with the Games.
Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.
Forms, styles and what to inspect
The current family lists Regular, 3D, Back, Middle and Outside styles designed for layered compositions. Its tall, condensed capital forms create repeating stripes, with layers that can be aligned and colored separately. Inspect registration between the styles before treating them as independent weights for ordinary paragraphs.
Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.
Try it in a real layout
Use a short festival heading and align the same text across two or more layers. Keep position, size and letter spacing identical while changing layer colors. Inspect the result at the actual poster size, then simplify the palette if the fine stripe gaps become difficult to follow.
For independent comparisons, try Righteous and Monoton. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
