Matter: background and attribution
Martin Vácha first sketched Matter in June 2015, with a release in August 2016. Displaay’s current account records an April 2026 update. Its grotesque structure is softened through open terminals and small angular details, giving the family a particular character within a familiar category.
Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.
Forms, styles and what to inspect
The collection distinguishes proportional, SemiMono and Mono constructions, each with standard and taller-x-height branches. Its four variable axes address weight, slant, monospacing and x-height. A 96-style collection total is therefore spread across six families rather than one simple weight list.
Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.
Try it in a real layout
Try a label, a numeric table and a short paragraph. Compare the spacing branches on aligned values, then inspect the x-height choice at smaller sizes. Record both the construction and x-height branch so the layout can be reproduced.
For independent comparisons, try Inter and Manrope. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
