Distinguish the commissioned title and text companions
Ray Larabie’s Korataki history documents BioWare’s Mass Effect commission and the simultaneous Typodermic release in 2006. His Domyouji account describes the 2007 body-text companion: Handel Gothic informed its proportions, while Korataki supplied its underlying letter shapes. This is a two-role relationship, not a reason to describe every trilogy text element or later installment as one unchanged font.
Judge broad titles and low-resolution text differently
Larabie describes adjusting Domyouji for CRT limitations, flattening rounded tops and using abrupt slopes to avoid difficult near-horizontal lines. For your own science-fiction interface, compare MISSION ARCHIVE as a broad heading with a realistic transmission paragraph beneath it. First inspect the paragraph at the intended screen size, then enlarge it to understand which shapes caused hesitation. Michroma and Orbitron here are independent display comparisons; neither demonstrates Domyouji’s original small-text construction.
Record the edition instead of relying on old weight names
Korataki’s creator records later italic expansion, removal of its early katakana set and a 2024 weight-name reorganization. When reopening an old layout, record the actual installed version and style before substituting a similarly named weight. Proof the final wording again instead of assuming that an old package and the current family expose identical characters and menu names. Use the original Korataki resource for the publisher’s specimen. The homepage’s copyable character styles substitute Unicode characters; they do not install either commissioned family or preserve the game’s interface typography.
Your questions, answered.
What is the relationship between Korataki and Domyouji?
Larabie identifies both as BioWare commissions, with Domyouji designed as a reading-text companion to Korataki.
Is Korataki a free Mass Effect fan font?
The creator explicitly says Korataki was never released free. Follow the original publisher’s current resource and terms rather than treating fan-file labels as evidence.
