Marathon: background and attribution

Rudolf Koch originally designed Marathon for Klingspor in 1931. Linotype's account describes Ute Harder's later redesign under the supervision of Jovica Veljovic, including an added Book weight. That development distinguishes the historical design from the expanded digital resources available today.

Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.

02

Forms, styles and what to inspect

Marathon is a roman serif with short ascenders and descenders. The source highlights an M without upper serifs, a lowercase g with an open tail, and crossing inner strokes in W. These details create a specific letter texture that generic descriptions such as classic serif do not capture.

Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.

03

Try it in a real layout

Compare words containing M, W and g in a short heading and a sample paragraph. Short vertical extenders affect the texture of stacked lines, so judge leading in a real block of text. Compare Book with the other available resources instead of assuming historical and current editions have identical weight choices.

For independent comparisons, try Lora and EB Garamond. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
