Mantinia: background and attribution

Matthew Carter designed Mantinia as a titling face inspired by Andrea Mantegna’s painted and engraved letters and their relationship with Roman monumental lettering. MoMA dates Mantinia to 1993 and describes it as a companion to Carter’s Galliard. The current Carter & Cone account credits Kent Lew and Jill Pichotta with a later remastering.

Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.

02

Forms, styles and what to inspect

Mantinia’s distinctive resources include inscription-like ligatures, raised small capitals and selected tall capitals. These details reflect lettering carved or arranged in stone rather than an ordinary lowercase text system. Compare the actual glyph output in the specimen: a character-map category alone does not describe how a titling glyph will look.

Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.

03

Try it in a real layout

Try a short exhibition heading with a date line. Compare ordinary capital settings with a few ligature or tall-capital choices, allowing enough space around the resulting silhouette. Keep the descriptive paragraph in a separate reading face and use the inscriptional details selectively rather than filling every word with them.

For independent comparisons, try Cinzel and Marcellus. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
