Manofa: background and attribution
Mariya Lish designed Manofa for Inhouse Type. The publisher describes a calligraphic sans serif influenced by Warren Chappell’s Lydian and developed from experiments with the shape of the letter O. That specific starting point matters: its sculptural appearance is linked to a design investigation, rather than to a general-purpose geometric sans-serif recipe. The family is presented as contemporary display typography with a deliberately sharp character, making the original specimen more informative than an unsupported list of supposedly identical substitutes.
Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.
Forms, styles and what to inspect
The published system has four weights, matching italics and two widths, producing sixteen styles. Its catalog separates normal and condensed members, including Light, Regular, Medium and Bold treatments. Alternate characters and OpenType features add further choices beyond the default letters. The source’s calligraphic description does not make Manofa a connected handwriting script; the sans-serif construction and the O-led experimentation should be considered together when comparing its actual alphabet and the shape of a particular headline.
Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.
Try it in a real layout
Build an arts-exhibition invitation with a short title containing a round letter, an artist name and a plain date line. Compare the normal and condensed versions without stretching either sample. Choose a weight after the width works, then inspect the italic as a separate accent. Keep descriptive text in a calmer reading face and look at the full title at final size so its sculptural details contribute to recognition rather than turning every letter into a competing focal point.
For independent comparisons, try Belleza and Josefin Sans. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
