Magistral: background and attribution
Magistral was developed at ParaType by Dmitry Kirsanov, with initial digital weights dated 1997 in the publisher account. Its source material came from Andrey Kryukov’s late-1960s railway lettering, itself informed by Eurostile proportions. Further styles and expanded character sets followed in 2009.
Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.
Forms, styles and what to inspect
Compare standard, condensed and extra-condensed resources in the current family. Its squared construction and the available widths are separate choices from weight. The current listing also includes variable resources; inspect the selected file and its controls rather than assuming that every static style offers those controls.
Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.
Try it in a real layout
Test a technical heading, a timetable-like label and a short reference code. Compare number recognition and spacing at the actual size. Choose the designed width that fits the layout before stretching or squeezing the letters mechanically.
For independent comparisons, try Russo One and Michroma. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
