Mabry: background and attribution

Benjamin Critton and Colophon Foundry developed Mabry from the NG Grotesque commission made for Nasty Gal in 2014. Colophon’s specimen records its retail release in January 2018 and later extensions. Its name also connects with Betty Mabry, known as Betty Davis, whose music supplied the apparel company’s name.

Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.

02

Forms, styles and what to inspect

The family balances nineteenth-century grotesque references with early geometric sans-serif ideas. Colophon’s version-three specimen lists a proportional family with seven weights and italics alongside a smaller monospaced family. Keep those branches distinct when comparing spacing: a font with a related family name is not automatically a fixed-width replacement.

Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.

03

Try it in a real layout

Set a heading, a short paragraph and an information label. Compare the proportional design with a monospaced branch only if the layout benefits from a fixed character advance. Judge the overall word rhythm at the intended size and record the branch, weight and italic selection when handing the document to another editor.

For independent comparisons, try DM Sans and Inter. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
