Linotype Didot: background and attribution
Adrian Frutiger drew Linotype Didot in 1991, studying Firmin Didot’s types from 1799–1811 and an 1818 printing of Voltaire’s La Henriade. It is a specific digital interpretation within a broader Didot tradition.
Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.
Forms, styles and what to inspect
High contrast and fine details should be inspected at the intended output size. Distinguish this release from other Didot-named designs rather than assuming one shared spacing or glyph set. An italic must be selected from the actual family’s available styles.
Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.
Try it in a real layout
Try a fashion-style headline and a small supporting line on the final background. Keep delicate strokes visible without making all text equally fine. Prata and Gilda Display provide independent high-contrast serif comparisons, with their own fine details and spacing.
For independent comparisons, try Prata and Gilda Display. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
