King Basil: background and attribution

Missy Meyer describes King Basil as the first font she chose to sell and records a substantial 2025 update for its ninth birthday. Some added alternates came from the original pen-on-paper drawings. The creator also notes that the design was briefly called Spiffy McGee, an earlier name rather than a separate companion family.

Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.

02

Forms, styles and what to inspect

The current release includes entry and exit swashes, double-letter ligatures, extra alternates and extended Latin characters. The creator maps entry swashes to the Swash feature and lowercase exit swashes to Stylistic Alternates. PUA access provides another way to select characters when an application’s feature controls are limited.

Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.

03

Try it in a real layout

Compare a short greeting with default characters, then add one entry or exit flourish at a time. Leave enough room around the first and last letters to keep the decorative strokes clear. Inspect repeated-letter combinations and accents at the final invitation or label size.

For independent comparisons, try Yellowtail and Satisfy. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
