Kinescope: background and attribution

Mark Simonson released Kinescope in 2007, taking inspiration from hand-lettered titles in the Fleischer Brothers' Superman cartoons. He describes considerable interpretation and newly invented characters, so the result is a modern typeface inspired by that material rather than the original production's font software.

Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.

02

Forms, styles and what to inspect

The family uses OpenType substitutions to select letter shapes according to their position in a word. Its connected 1940s-style brush lettering therefore depends on application support for the intended connections. The source also lists ligatures, fractions and extended Latin-language support.

Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.

03

Try it in a real layout

Type a short title with repeated letters and inspect the beginning, middle and end of each word. Compare behavior with the application's contextual features enabled. Keep supporting information simpler and judge the connected script at its final size rather than from an enlarged logo sample alone.

For independent comparisons, try Yellowtail and Lobster. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.

GOOD QUESTIONS

Your questions, answered.

Was Kinescope used to create the original Fleischer Superman titles?

Simonson describes those hand-lettered titles as inspiration for his 2007 typeface, with interpretation and invented characters. That is different from identifying original production software.

Why do Kinescope letters change while typing?

The font uses OpenType substitutions to choose forms according to their word position. Correct behavior depends on application support.

Where can I find guidance for its features?

The official page links a specimen and a dedicated user guide explaining the typography features.
