The studio extended a lettermark into several families
Studio DRAMA’s KFC project with JKR describes refining the familiar mark and extending its lettermark into Kentucky Fried Stripes, a display-driven typeface inspired by the red-and-white stripe motif. The studio also identifies Kentucky Fried Serif and Kentucky Fried Sans as related developments. These are named commissioned components of the documented rebrand, not proof that a single commercial font recreates every KFC sign or historical package.
The system makes room for smaller text
The studio describes open counters and a high x-height within its approach to the families. Kentucky Fried Sans was designed particularly for smaller point sizes, translating characteristics from the serif into a supporting sans. The distinction matters when a large menu heading and a short description must share an identity while operating at different reading distances.
Keep a stripe experiment confined to a short headline
For a fictional kitchen poster, draw three large letters and test whether a simple stripe through them remains understandable. Compare the result with an unbroken version before extending the idea to a whole sentence. Preserve the main counters and avoid cutting a narrow stroke until it vanishes. Use DM Serif Display as an independent starting comparison, not an identified KFC font, and test in one color before introducing any decorative pattern.
Design a menu people can scan in order
Set three invented dishes with a name, one description and a price. Compare Source Sans 3 and Inter for the smaller lines while leaving the headline visibly larger. Align prices consistently and allow enough space between dishes that the description cannot be mistaken for the next item. View the menu from farther away, then inspect a handheld version. A display effect that works at the top does not need to be repeated inside every ingredient description.
Your questions, answered.
Does this identify every historical KFC font?
No. The attribution concerns the custom system documented in the studio’s case study. An older package, campaign or wordmark needs its own dated evidence.
Are the independent previews the official custom fonts?
No. Use them to compare your own words and layouts. The project account documents commissioned work, not a public license or download for the brand’s font files.
