Jurassic Park Font: Book Lettering and Film Logo Differences

Explore the sources, compare the examples and choose the right approach.

Jurassic Park’s book jacket and film identity share the dinosaur drawing, but their lettering is different. Chip Kidd’s own accounts make that distinction explicit and prevent the artwork’s history from becoming an inaccurate universal font claim.

01

Separate the drawing from the lettering

In his Design Matters interview, Chip Kidd clarifies that he created both typography and dinosaur drawing for the original book jacket, while the dinosaur drawing was the part adapted into the film logo. He explicitly says the film lettering was by somebody else. This is an important credit distinction: identifying the illustrator of the emblem does not automatically identify the designer or exact font behind every subsequent title treatment.

02

Book typography had a specific purpose

Kidd’s first-person Spark and Fire account describes the original book lettering as utilitarian, suggesting park wayfinding. He contrasts that approach with the more stylized film treatment he later encountered. The continuous dinosaur image tied the designs together while other elements changed. Keep the book edition and film asset identified when comparing specimens, and do not assume an unchanged illustration means the surrounding typography also remained identical.

03

A named font comparison needs its own evidence

The Neuland guide concerns a real typeface history and is useful comparative reading. It should not be substituted for an authoritative identification of every film logo, sequel or merchandise treatment. Retain the exact title image and compare its shapes, inline treatment and spacing separately. The image-identification workflow helps keep a broad association from turning into an unsupported exact-font attribution.

04

Build an original adventure heading

Try a short museum or wildlife-event title with one illustration and a plain supporting line. Decide whether the title should resemble practical signage or an expressive promotional display before adding texture or an enclosing badge. Check the name without the illustration and at a small preview size. Keep source credits for the illustration and lettering separate, and record the actual font selected for the new composition.
