IvyMode: background and attribution
Jan Maack’s IvyMode began as a high-contrast companion to IvyJournal before developing its own identity. The foundry’s account, also published by Adobe, dates the design to 2018. Its unusually contrasted sans construction carries subtle suggestions of serifs without becoming an ordinary text serif.
Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.
Forms, styles and what to inspect
Flared stroke endings, diamond-shaped dots and punctuation, angled cuts and discretionary ligatures contribute to the character. Inspect the specific branch and glyph choices in the original family. Ligatures can change a short heading’s shape without creating a different weight.
Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.
Try it in a real layout
Compare a short fashion or packaging heading in ordinary forms before trying a ligature. Check fine strokes and punctuation against the intended background. Keep a simpler companion available when the design needs smaller labels or extended text.
For independent comparisons, try Italiana and Poiret One. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
