ITC Souvenir: background and attribution

Morris Fuller Benton’s original Souvenir was issued as metal type by ATF in 1914. The publisher account traces Ed Benguiat’s phototype reinterpretation to 1967 and its later ITC family release to the early 1970s. The stages identify different technologies and releases rather than one unchanged set of font files.

Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.

02

Forms, styles and what to inspect

Its rounded forms and generous lowercase proportions create a different impression from narrow or sharply contrasted serifs. Compare a longer sentence before choosing a weight: a friendly display word does not establish suitability for a dense paragraph.

Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.

03

Try it in a real layout

Try a packaging title alongside an ingredient-style line. Compare Lora and Alice as independent serif options, checking the density of the paragraph and the space inside repeated lowercase letters.

For independent comparisons, try Lora and Alice. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
