ITC Serif Gothic: background and attribution

ITC Serif Gothic began as a two-weight display family in 1972, with four more weights added in 1974. Herb Lubalin and Antonio DiSpigna collaborated on the initial designs; the publisher credits DiSpigna with the later additions. Its background lies in lettering for a Lubalin studio client.

Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.

02

Forms, styles and what to inspect

The family’s small pointed stroke endings relate to copperplate-gothic construction rather than conventional full serifs. Inspect those endings at the intended size, where a subtle detail may become difficult to distinguish.

Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.

03

Try it in a real layout

Compare a masthead and a compact package title. Cinzel and Marcellus are independent display-serif comparisons with different proportions. Use the same phrase so the comparison tests letterforms instead of different wording.

For independent comparisons, try Cinzel and Marcellus. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
